How to tune your violin

Tap Start and allow microphone access. Bow or pluck one open string at a time. The tuner detects the closest string and shows the deviation in cents. Turn the fine tuner or peg until the needle centers and the row turns green. Tune the A string first (440 Hz is the standard orchestral reference pitch), then work outward: D, G, E.

Standard tuning reference (G D A E)

Violin open strings, from lowest to highest pitch:

String Note Frequency
G (lowest)G3196.00 Hz
DD4293.66 Hz
AA4440.00 Hz
E (highest)E5659.25 Hz

Fine tuners vs. pegs

Use the fine tuners (the small screws at the tailpiece) for small adjustments — less than about 10 cents. They give much more precise control. Use the pegs only when the string is far out of tune, as they move pitch in larger steps and can slip if not seated firmly.

After tuning, play a few notes to let the strings settle, then check the tuning again. Humidity and temperature changes cause violin strings to drift more than steel-string instruments.

Other tuners

Need to tune a different instrument? Use the Chromatic tuner for any note, or the Guitar tuner (E A D G B E).
